Prompt 1:

Netflix operating in over 190 countries with 130 million subscribers are outside the U.S. With being internationally they secure their deals region by region and country by country. Dealing with national regulatory restrictions and what can be available in these countries making it available in that language. With Canada being a part of the early expansion in 2010 it allowed Netflix service in Latin America and Europe and remaining closed to the culture of those origins and other foreign nations.

Netflix did have issues when it came to Australia, they would not let them into the country because Netflix was rather a technology company instead of a broadcasting company and it would not comply to local regulations. Indonesian, Vietnamese and Malaysia government kept Netflix from extending its services because they did not comply to the censorship policies.

Netflix as they interact with the policies and regulation have learn to build trust with regulators and develop for future productions because of the international expansion. It would be competitive with other streaming companies among the US-based services that competes aboard.

Prompt 2:

Amazon has quickly grown to cover the globe but with this wider customer pool comes more laws, acts, and governing bodies. There are trade control laws that Amazon must follow when shipping to other countries. These include but are not limited to: U.S. sanction laws and regulations put forth by the U.S. Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), the U.S. Department of State, Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC), and the Export Administration Regulations (EAR). These also depend on the country of export, the country of import, the country of origin of the items, and more to determine what additional laws and regulations could need to be followed from the U.S. and other countries with jurisdiction of the shipment.

There are also places that Amazon is not allowed to ship to at all. These places are called sanctioned countries, entities, and individuals. These place include a number of countries that that have been identified as engaging with terrorism, narcotics trafficking, weapons proliferation and other activities that threaten a country’s national security, foreign policies or economy. These sanctioned countries include Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Sudan, and the Crimea Region of Ukraine. Amazon is not allowed to ship or sell anything to these countries. These countries are also not allowed to make an Amazon account or affiliate an account with one of these countries.

These are just a few of the laws and regulations that Amazon has to follow when they ship their products internationally. After reading through the list of international laws that they have to follow I’m pretty convinced that they must have a whole team, if not multiple teams (like one for each country), monitoring and interpreting international laws to make sure that Amazon is following all the rules and is allowed to continue to sell and ship their products around the world.
